Illustrate your book, report or grant application

As an expert in your field, you are likely dealing with complex subject matter. You may be used to communicate with your in-group of expert peers via text, models and numbers.

Sometimes however you need to convey a complex idea to a more diverse, less patient, or overburdened audience. Whether you present a research proposal, summarise findings in a report, or write a book: A conceptual illustration is what you need.

A conceptual illustration has a narrative element - something is happening. There is some kind of punchline. It grips the attention. It makes the idea stand out and stick.

To develop such a visual narrative, we sit down to talk. I draw some first ideas. In the subsequent back and forth I respond to your feedback and input within the bandwidth of my drawing style. Typically this process includes at least three calls or meetings.

Clients have experienced creating illustrations with me as some of the most fun parts of their writing, publication or presentation process.

joint creative process may also help to think about and sharpen the message you are forging.

If this sounds interesting, contact me to discuss your needs. If you remain interested, I will come up with some ideas for the illustration(s) and make you an offer.

Costs

Costs vary since each project is tailored to your specific needs. My standard hourly price is 80 euro (excl. VAT).

To get some idea:

  • One illustration, for example of a theoretical model: > 600 euro (excl. VAT). Takes about a week.

  • Two illustrations: > 1000 euro (excl. VAT). The process may take a bit longer and include more calls.

  • Three illustrations: > 1300 euro (excl. VAT). The process will take at least about two weeks to complete.

  • A set of ten image elements for a multi-slide presentation: > 1200 euro (excl. VAT). Since I am not a graphic designer, I only deliver the drawings. For an additional fee, I can hire a graphic designer for you to design the presentation around my illustrations.

  • Ten book illustrations: > 5000 euro excl. VAT.

Recent work

Testimonial: grant application project

"

David made the illustrations for a PowerPoint presentation I gave during an interview that determined whether I would receive a Consolidator Grant of the European Research Council for my research on gossip. I wanted a presentation that would look a bit different than others, such that it would "stand out". Yet, of course, I also wanted to tell a clear story.

David made beautiful illustrations. We discussed my research and based on our conversation, he drew illustrations that perfectly conveyed the story I wanted to tell. I very much liked the way in which we collaborated on the presentation and David was very responsive to my suggestions.

The presentation went very well and... I received the grant! David's creativity definitely helped a lot and I warmly recommend seeking his assistance in case you need custom-made illustrations to convey a research project in a presentation, report, or book.
